  • Succulent of the Month – Sempervivum Posted February 28, 2017

Spring may not quite be in the air just yet, but it isn’t far. If like me, you are itching to get in the garden and start planting, but you are a bit put off about the sharp frosts and the lashings of rain we are still likely to encounter, plant a succulent that is extra tough and happy to be outside on our less sunshine filled days – the obvious choice: Sempervivums!

Succulent of the Month will be a new regular feature on the Succulent Addict blog, showcasing different succulents because there are just so many to love!

    Name: Sempervivum

    Common name: House Leek

Distinctive features: Rosette forming with thin leaves in differing combinations of greens, browns, purples and reds. Leaves curve to a point at the end.

Why I love it: They are near impossible to kill. Their name actually means ‘Ever-Living’. Even when they flower, and their beautiful blooms result in the ‘death’ of the original rosette, in time more rosettes will spring up and take it’s place. They come in very beautiful earthy colours and they form very attractive rosettes. They are also hardy – one of the few succulents that are! Which means we can enoy them in the garden all year round.

Things to watch out for: While Semps can cope with temperatures below freezing, they will sucumb to rot if they get too wet. Yes they will come back, but if you would like your semps to grow into colonies rather than having to start from scratch each Spring, I would advise keeping them somewhere sunny but sheltered from the rain and snow.

So be sure to go and pick up some Sempervivums for your spring time garden projects.
